Charles Wann

Charles Edmund Wann was born in Markethill 1816, the son of John and Eleanor Wann. He left Ireland aged about 23 and arrived in Sydney, Australia in 1839. His occupation was noted as a gunsmith on the Immigrant List for the ship Royal Admiral' which brought Charles Wann to Sydney. In Parramatta, New South Wales, Australia 1841 he married Mary Gass Menary who was also of Markethill. Mary was a passenger on the same ship to Sydney.

Charles and Mary Wann arrived in New Zealand about 1842. There were two children born in Auckland - Marianne (Polly) Wann born 1842 and John Thomas Wann born 1844.

About 1846 Charles Wann was the farm manager for James Dilworth on Dilworth's Remuera, Auckland property.
Sadly, at the age of 31 Charles Wann died in Remuera, Auckland, New Zealand. Charles was reported to have been suffering from depressed, and ending his life by shooting himself.

His widow Mary Wann later married Captain Thomas Millon and from 1850 she and the two children lived with Millon on his property, at Wanns Bay in the Matakana district north of Auckland. Their home is still standing at Wanns Bay (2005).
