Markethill

The town of Markethill is situated 7 miles south-east of Armagh.

Gosford Castle, built by one of the earls of Gosford in the nineteenth century, can be seen in the desmene nearby. The castle is built in the Norman style using granite from the Mullaglass quarries.
It is said that 19 Scottish families were settled in the area under the protection of H. Acheson, after the Plantation of Ulster 1609.

Mullabrack

The Parish of Mullabrack is one mile north of Markethill. It is here at the Mullabrack Parish Church (St John's, Church of Ireland ) that the Wann family worshipped. Of interest are the Wann family memorial headstones at the church. In 2005, only the memorial for James Christopher Wann is still standing. The older stones for John Wann (and family) and for William Wann (and famiy) are lying against the church.
A page on this website contains the transcriptions of these headstones.

This photo of Markethill was taken in 1984.
