The town of Markethill is situated 7 miles south-east of Armagh.
Gosford Castle, built by one of the Earls of Gosford in the nineteenth century, can be seen in the desmene nearby. The castle is built in the Norman style, using granite from the Mullaglass quarries. It is said that 19 scottish families were settled in the area under the protection of H. Acheson, following the Plantation of Ulster in 1609.
John Wann was Gosford’ agent and managed the estate from about 1800 until his death in 1828. The family lived in the grounds of the castle.
